There is a unique magic to a Christmas winter wedding at Holkham Hall. When Sophie and Tom held their celebration around Christmas Day, the objective was to capture the grand scale of the Palladian interiors while maintaining the warmth and intimacy of a festive gathering. From the towering Christmas tree in the Marble Hall to the flickering candlelight during the speeches, this film is a testament to why Holkham is one of the most iconic winter wedding venues in Norfolk.
Filming in the depths of winter requires a strategic creative approach. As a seasoned wedding videographer, I believe having a plan to maximise natural light is key to a successful winter film. Here are my top considerations for your December date:
Maximising Natural Light: With the sun setting as early as 3:30 PM in Norfolk, timing is everything. We prioritize your couple portraits immediately following the ceremony to catch the last of the “blue hour” light against the hall’s stone exterior before the daylight fades.
The Art of Low Light Filming: I utilize high-end, fast-aperture lenses specifically chosen for low-light environments. This allows me to capture the ambient, golden glow of the Marble Hall without using intrusive artificial lights that can strip away the atmosphere of a candlelit ceremony.
Embrace the Interior Textures: Holkham’s interiors are a filmmaker’s dream. The velvet shadows and gold leaf detailing provide a rich, cinematic backdrop that looks incredible on 4K film, even when the North Norfolk skies are grey outside.
The “Plan B” is Plan A: In winter, the interior is the feature. We don’t just “settle” for being indoors; we use the grand staircase and the statues for editorial-style shots that provide a sense of luxury and scale.
A winter wedding of this scale relies on a seamless team of professionals. It was a pleasure to work alongside these incredible suppliers for Sophie & Tom’s day:
